Taylor Swift's song 'The Black Dog' is an exploration of addiction and the complexities of breaking free. One particular lyric, “six weeks of breathing clean air, I still miss the smoke,” offers an interesting connection to a current health issue: Indoor Air Quality (often referred to as 'IAQ').
At first glance, the line seems to refer to a physical addiction, perhaps to cigarettes, recently recurring wildfires due to climate change, or maybe a love interest. Yet just as Taylor craved the familiarity of the 'smoke', despite its harmful effects, we also find ourselves often emotionally dependent on relationships with people or spaces that are bad for our health.
Such spaces can range from cluttered and poorly ventilated homes to smoky bars and offices with stale air. Are we simply accustomed to putting up with these out of familiarity, a lack of real awareness, or simply reluctance to change?
Fortunately, second-hand tobacco smoke has now largely been banned from indoor environments (though gas stove cooking remains a prominent source of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide). Other household pollutants include toxic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) emanating from furniture (via 'off-gasing') and household cleaning products. We should also not forget about carbon dioxide, a contaminant that we humans produce merely by breathing.
Poor IAQ can lead to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, allergies, headaches, and fatigue. Long-term exposure to pollutants can even increase the risk of serious diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Yet many of us, used to the smell of wood fires, deodorants, air fresheners and cleaning liquids, remain roblivious to the dangers lurking within our own personal space.
Ventilation: Open windows and doors regularly - when outside air quality permits - and use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Keep your home clean and dust-free. Use non-toxic cleaning products and change air filters regularly.
Control Humidity: Use dehumidifiers or humidifiers to maintain optimal humidity levels.
Mindful Product Choices: Choose low-VOC paints, cleaners, and other household products.
Monitoring: Stay informed about the IAQ in your environment to make the right decisions.
